#3- Dramedy Analysis
Drama is usually a fictional narrative that follows real-life scenarios that hold a serious tone. However, during my research, I have realized that the drama genre is like an umbrella. The title "drama" is the top of the umbrella, but there are sub-genres under that. Some examples are historical drama, soap opera, political drama, teen drama and comedy drama. Taking that into account my final project would be considered a comedy drama. In a future blog, I'll go more into depth about the themes involving my narrative about a teenager. This is because my main focus for this project is to make it serious and relatable to my specific audience. So, comedy won't be considered a genre of my final project because I don't want it to be a main part of my project. The comedy will be subtle to bring light to the serious tone. One film that inspired this idea is Greta Gerwig's "Barbie." This film discusses serious topics such as gender inequality and girlhood/womanhood with comedy to help the films topics not be too overbearing. Gerwig did a phenomenal job at making a good balance between both.
Comedy drama will be the main genre of my final project with a hint of romance. Romance is a narrative that features a romantic relationship. However, in my narrative I do want my main character to have a romantic relationship. This is because it's a big part of a girl teen life to have a many relationship, including romantic, to learn from. So, I would like to have subtle romance within my narrative.
In conclusion, the genre of my final project is comedy drama (dramedies) with minor romance.
Learning the history of the comedy drama is important for my whole journey of my final project. This research will help me understand the genre and it's aspects. The more films and TV shows with this genre I learn about and consume the more I'll be able to make a good film with this genre. The term dramedy was coined in the late 20th century. I personally would define this term as media that have a good balance between the genres comedy and drama to make light of serious real-life scenarios in narratives. In recent years the genre dramedy have become more used by writers and directors. They are relatable to the directed audiences with humorous tones. I personally prefer this genre over all others. In a future blog post I will discuss films and TV shows in this genre.
