#4- Lets Talk About Themes

Some people may confuse genre and theme. However, the theme is the concept the storyteller is trying to tell. Many different types of media, such as films and literature, themes. To break it down, the theme of movie is the recurring message the that filmmaker explores throughout the movie duration, it also goes for TV shows. The theme helps communicate meaning, evoke the audiences emotions, and connect with the audience on a personal level. The theme or themes of a story add depths and create a more captivating movie that allows audiences to have an enjoyable movie experience.

Every genre has different themes they can portray, and also to keep in mind not every story is limited to one theme. A movie could have many themes, but there is usually one main underlying theme. The themes I want to incorporate into my film are coming of age, human relationships, and teen experience.

Coming of age is a story that tells the journey of the main character growing up and "coming of age." My story will show the senior year experience of my main character and how it is important to her journey of moving on from childhood to womanhood.

A major theme that shows throughout not only dramedies, but every type of narrative is human relationships. The interaction between characters tells a story about each character. How a mother and daughter interact can tell the audience about their relationship. In my final project my main character will have a bad relationship with her mother. I don't know how I'm going to incorporate that into my final cut, but once I figure it out I'll update my blog. In my final cut I will show the relationship between the main character and her best friend. By using costume design I will show how different they are, but with dialogue it'll show that they are good friends.

I feel like teen experience can be portrayed through growing up and relationships they experience. However, I would consider "teen experience" as a theme, so it would be my overlying theme of the whole narrative. Throughout my narrative (even though my narrative will only show the two minute introduction) my characters will experience the life of a teenager. This will attract teenagers because they will find the story and characters relatable. Making relatable characters is the goal of every narrative.
