#13- Working with lighting

The video featured in this blog post was an assignment we had to execute in or Media Studies class. We discussed the different types of lighting used in films. It was our mission to create a narrative using these different types of lighting: natural lighting, chiaroscurio, high-key and low-key lighting. The video doesn't have the best quality of these types of lighting, however, as high school students using the flash lights of our phones we executed the project as best as we could.

The video was published to a fellow classmate that is being re-evaluated on her AICE Media Studies. I played the part at taking the reigns of the plot, with the input of my two other partners, and the main actress of the little narrative. We brainstormed together on how we will execute each type of lighting.

The notes we took in class, the research we did to get better understanding and executing a tiny project helped me understand the different types of lighting and how they communicate meaning.

Chiaroscrio is a lighting technique that used high-key lighting to emphasize a subject in a dark background. We used three different phone flashlight to create this lighting. Two behind me, one of my left and one on my right. As well as one directly on my face to focus the attention on me (the subject of the scene).

Low-key lighting is a type of lighting technique that accentuates shadows, high contrast and dark tones. This type of lighting is usually used in thriller, horror, film noir, and any other film that is trying to create a moody tone. We used this type of lighting to translate this meaning to the viewer, because my character is upset about being caught.

High-key lighting is a type of lighting that is bright and lights up the entire frame. It features soft lighting, little to none shadows and low contrast. Usually used to create an uplifting and happy mood. a lot of photographers use it in wedding shoots to create this mood, which is important for such a special event. In films, it's usually used in romance films to create the same exact mood and to have the audience feel enjoyment towards the narrative.

Natural lighting is lighting that is generated from a natural source which is commonly the sun. We used the sun through the windows to light the shot we did for natural lighting.

After thinking it over the main type of lighting I'll be using in my AICE Media Studies Final Project will be natural lighting. I'll be using the sun to light up majority of my shots because I plan on a big chunk of my action to be outside.
