#27- Sound Check 123
Coming-of-age movies are usually based around one teen character and their lives as they form self identity. All of the action to build up the narrative and make the story appeal to it's audience has sound.
I added sounds to fill the silence of the shots where there was no dialogue or music needed. Without the sounds the shots will be silent and won't make sense.
- I added the sounds of mourning doves chirping and cows chewing to the establishing shots. I was able to find the sounds of these two from videos on the internet. I layered the sounds on top of each other in the editing process as if both sounds were happening at the same time. I used iMovie on my phone to layer the sounds.
- When Aurora was laying in bed my camera didn't pick up any of the noises of her moving. I had to add sounds of bed sheets moving. I recorded this myself on my phone and added it over the shot.
- Between the shots of Aurora taking her headphones out and the dialogue between her and her mother, I added water and dishes clacking together I also recorded this myself on my phone and added it over the shot.
The alarm clock sound was also added in during the sound editing process. I found a video of an alarm going off on the internet. I was able to save it and add it over the shots where the alarm fits in. I transferred the sound from the shot of the exterior of the house tot he interior of Aurora's room. I thought this was a creative addition for the transition other than starting the alarm in the interior of the room.
It is very common in lots of films, of any genre, to start with a song. For my opening sequence I chose "Just a Girl" by No Doubt. This is because I wanted to add a song for the sequence of Aurora getting ready and walking from her house because it is very much a girl anthem. In my opinion, I feel like it really correlates with Aurora. I started thinking about this song when I pictured the scenes at first.
My camera was able to pick up the dialogue, but I made the decision that I wanted to recorded and add the dialogue over the shot.
For the dialogue between Aurora and her mother I recorded the conversation on my phone (using voice memos). I was able to add it on top of the shots in the editing process. I did this on iMovie instead of my computer. This is because it was so much easier and faster to add sound on my final cut rather than using the editing software on my computer.
For my dialogue between Aurora and Josie I didn't use the audio from my voice memos. My camera picked up the dialogue better, in the recording all I could hear is the movement of the actors clothes. That is the only scene where there is not added sound from the editing process.
